The problems the PA folks seem to have at Hartwood are mighty familiar and, like all maintenance issues, make me feel like a slug. I don't do the organized "maintenance crew" thing. I'd like to, but around here they always fall on Sundays when I'm wearing my cape and being super dad.
So I do other things to salve my conscience: maintenance on the fly. Where folks are cutting around obstacles, I'll put branches in the way so others won't be further tempted. Where erosion controls are falling apart I'll build them back up as best I can with whatever I can lay my hands on. And where courduroy's been put over perennially muddy sections, I'll keep that up to snuff too. Its not much, but it only takes a couple of minutes and it makes me feel better that I always seem to miss maintenance days. And above all, I buy beers for the folks who do show up for maintenance whenever I can, and give them a pat on the back and a thanks.
The other thing I try to do is always chat up non-bikers. Good will from the larger trail using community can make up for a lot of maintenance sins.
How about you? Are you a joiner, a loner, or a make doer?
