I am really considering the Mt ride from Telluride to Moab. I'm thinking next year. But I keep thinking that is way bigger than me. But gadfy that sounds cool and if I don't get it done soon I may regret it when I get too old.
(No dancing monkey this time)

Do it. What's a little self-inflicted suffering in the big scheme of things. You're right. You will regret it if you don't.

I've been thinking about it a lot today. Just thinking about it is lifting my doldrums. I think it just might be good for my soul. I may do a little surfing tonight and see if I can get better information.

You're right, you might regret it later . . . and if you prep well enough, should be a piece of cake! :p
Seriously, tho - sounds very cool. Got someone to tag along with you?

Yep really looking at it. The problem is the altitude. The milage per day won't be a problem. The country should be something to see. Don't want to do it in the heat either.
So far Rick and I are the only ones here that are serious. Richard cannot get the time next summer.
Looking at shipping the bikes there then assembling and flying in. But then there are the problems of moving around. The good way to do it would be to send two rigs with all the bikes and the rest fly then a rig at the top and a rig at the bottom.
Logistics are interesting.
We ride a lot in the 5,000 to 6,000 but 11,000 now that is something. I am not sure there is oxygen up there.
You think you want to go?

I think if you're in good shape and have a good foundation of miles in, you will adjust to the altitude after a few days. At least that's my impression . . .
Sounds like a blast, but I honestly can't even make plans for the evening!

I think to pull this off without a lot of complications I had better be planning now. But then I could just spend the entire week in Moab..... hmmmm

Moab is great - there is tons of cool riding, totally varied terrain, certainly a great place to spend a week if you have some time to blow. Decisions, decisions . . . just had the 24 hour race this weekend, awesome.

...if I remember right, the body's initial adjustment to altitude is to thin the blood and increase the heartrate and respiration. That happens within a few days and is sort of a stop-gap measure, allowing more oxygen to get to the muscles only because more blood does. Speaking from experience, its a short term solution to a long term problem, and not a very good one at that. Only after a few weeks at altitude have sufficient additional red blood cells been produced to efficiently carry oxygen to the muscles.

Maruiceman - I cannot imagine a 24 hour race after six hours I was plenty amiable to stopping.
Wooglin - Thanks for the information I do believe I have heard that also. If we wait a year possibly Richard could go with us. So Moab may be our choice. Still thinking.

Actually, that was me using Maurice's mail - and we didn't do it solo! Oh, no crazy we are not! Well, should I say, lazy we are? Anyway, we had a 5 person team, and the hardest part is having to get up in the middle of the cold night to go out again. But it's a challenge!
We did do a duo at the 7 springs 24 hour. Now, that was hard. I admit, I whined to myself out in the woods in the dead of the night ;)
I have a solution to your quandary - do both trips!
