... have I been thinking I could slap on that old 38t ring I've got lying around and run a 2:1 with my 18t cog? Its a sad day when even a singlespeed is too complicated for me.....

It's not your fault woog. Math is hard.

If you're really looking for the 2:1, you should go with a 36 up front.
Having that 38 might put you in the 2:1.09 ranks....
But really, if you're in somewhat flat land, you could easily go with the 38. I had a friend who spent years on a 42 x 16... in Oregon, nonetheless!

Ummm.... Though I appreciate the thought, I'm not that mathematically challenged. :)
A 36x18 does me just fine around here. I was just having a senior moment.
I'm definetely challenged not only by math but some of the trails I ride on my ss. I've found that you do't necessarily need to go 2:1. I've got a 34/18. It's worked for me for the past 5 years in hilly terrain.
As long as you aren't trying to catch up with your geared friends on long flats, the 34/18 works great, especially for someone who's just celebrated his 42nd b'day.
Give it a try!

Right. I loved my 32:16 gear ratio more than anything. Then my brother and I spent 3 days riding some rocky, hilly madness in Marquette, MI (get there!). He was riding 32:20 and could actually make some of those climbs that made me feel like I was trying to ride up a wall. His question: "What did you think it would be like?"
Of course, when we were riding down the road between trails he was grabbing my belt so he wouldn't have to spin his cranks off...
