Two of my riding buddies and I have had clunking noises from our cranks. Usually under hard load pedalling and at about the 2 o'clock position of the right crank. Anyone ever experience this? Its intermittent and I even replaced a BB cartridge thinking this would surely cure it but it came back. However on one guys bike I took out the BB cartridge and put it back in and the noise was gone. Go figure!

There is something we are missing. Brains perhaps?

Tighten crank bolts.
Tighten chainring bolts.
Tighten BB.

Report back. Was anything loose?

Also, is your chain skipping?

One bike had a bad chain at the same time. This is the one that went back to normal after doing all of the above. The other 2 bikes, both Jamis Dakar Experts, I have not figured out at all. It made me wonder if there was ever a bad batch of Shimani BB-ES70.

Could be... the es-70s are no longer available, only the es-71. I think there is a year warrenty on those, so if there is a prob and it's less than a year, have a shop warrenty it through QBP, which will send you a new unit in the mean time (you might have to "buy" it first and wait for them to verify it as a warrenty issue). I had a similar problem with an Ultregra bb, which was replaced by a "different" ultegra bb, nothing mentioned, no change in the actual model year.
