View Full Version : Speaking of SS's
I recently picked up an old JC Penney SS w/a coaster brake during the local "junk days".Is there a stem available that is longer and will accept a flat bar that I can use to modify this bike? Are there any options as far as modifying or replacing the wheels to something more durable?

Sounds like you're trying to turn that JC Penny bike into something it was never meant to be. Instead of throwing good money after bad by trying to *upgrade* it, just appreciate it for what it is. True the wheels, lube the chain, repack the bearings/hubs -- and ride away with a big smile on yer mug.
If waht you really want is and off-road capable mountain bike ss, keep yer eyes open on trash day and you might get lucky in that department, too.
Point taken Sub-Dude,I have an old Hawthorne w/a Sturmey-Archer 3 spd that I have done just that with. While attending 24 hrs of Canaan a couple yrs back I was admiring the bikes of Team Hugh Jass, and have since wondered what kind of frames were used.So I guess what I'm asking is,is there an ideal older frame for building such a bike?

I guess *ideal* is in the eye of the beholder. My criteria for an ideal old bike to make into a ss includes: inexpensive, chromoly or decent steel alloy, easy to find, not-too-cheesy, still in decent shape. Just my way of thinking, not rocket science. It seems that 1980's vintage Specialized or Trek frames meeting those criteria are fairly easy to find in the used bikes classifieds. Many have been sitting in garages, and are in decent shape.
Good luck.

I think you could still find a different stem to put on there if you so desire. Just make sure to get the right quill and handlebar sizes.

Not a big fan of mail order, and always a proponent of reviving an old bike, BUT, Nashbar has some steel mountain frames for only $69.00. That would make a great SS.
