How many times have you seen a posted sign when you were out ridding ? Would'nt it be nice if a large majority of the land owners started to open their land for certain types of recreation like, mountain biking ? Think of the trail access one would have ? I have asked a few people in my area if I could ride on, or through their land and most of them granted me permission. Are there any trails in your ridding vecinity that you wish you could ride on that have posted signs on them ?

I haven't seen any in my area that I would like to ride...yet. You bring up a good point, you asked and they allowed you. That is much better than going ahead and riding it without permission and then everyone is denied permission.

Asking permission is certainly the best way of not getting into trouble, however what do you do when you don't know who owns the land to begin with?

Always following the basic trail rules are the best ways of keeping existing trails open on posted land... the less you leave behind the better!

One of my less responsible riding bud's makes this excuse for poaching rides on posted land. " It is easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission". Educating him has been an exercise in futility.

sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do ;)

Depends on the level of heat. Some places just don't want to be over run. They might send a few people out to scare people away and then they chill. Sort of thinning the herd.

Land ownership is public record. You should be able to get that info from your town hall, or courthouse. Much is also available on line.

I think this issue just boils down to common sense. If you're out on an epic ride, you come across a posted sign, what are you going to do? First off, if you see the sign chances are you're already tresspassing - and you're going to be tresspassing (chances are) either way you ride. So what do you do? Tread lightly, and don't leave anything behind, what else is there?

I'm not saying go out and trail blaze on posted land, but there is a grey area to this issue and I think any real trail riders know this unspoken code. Asking permission is certainly the best way about this issue, but like I said sometimes it is difficult finding who even owns the land. I don't know how much free time you guys have but I like to spend mine riding instead of local research. ;)

Just being realistic, and honest in upstate new york...
