Tried to ride Roaring Run for the first time on the evening of 7/22/04. At the parking lot along the Kiskiminkees (sp) a DO NO ENTER sign was posted. I parked anyway. There was a pickup and heavy construction equipment in the lot. I checked out a warning sign about Copperheads and then an late 50ish guy approached me and told me the trail was closed for the building of a new, larger parking lot. He said the local police where patrolling the lot to ensure no one parked at the lot and that more formal signs regarding construction had not been posted. This guy seemed pretty knowledgable about the bike trail and Roaring Run, he also indicated that the conservency or whoever owns the land just closed on a another parcel of land.
Bottom line: I didn't ride the bike trail or the singletrack. The guy said the trail would be closed of 6-8 weeks... before making the trip out there, it would be prudent to call someone to confirm the closure.

Tough issue, and one where mtb riders often cut our own collective throat by just "riding anyway". Since that may be inevitable, take the steps to ensure your local land managers know that the cycling community is both putting out the word about the trail closure, and eager for the reopening.

Just a note. Roaring Run in Apollo is now open. I was there yesterday. I was not there long but from what I saw they didn’t do much. I don’t know if they “needed” to shut the whole trail and indeed the entire area down to build an extra parking lot down closer to the river but it is open now to ride.

Indeed it is open again. They closed the area for the construction simply because there was nowhere to park. If you have been there when the old lot was jammed up you'll appreciate what has been done. You have to keep in mind that Roaring Run is a private land holder, it is not a public park, and as such, they can make the rules. They let us bikers have a pretty free reign over the trails, so you gotta respect the owners. By the way, membership to the Association is only $10.00 per year, it usually takes me one ride or less to feel I got my monies worth. Plus, if anyone does ever say anything to me, it will be really cool to show them my membership card, and ask them to see thiers. As for the trails, the section on the hillside above the parking lot has been logged, it is a real mess. I don't think it is Roaring Run property in that section. Most everything else was pretty good, just needs some minor tune ups.

They did do some work down on the rail trail along Roaring Run. I didn’t mean to seem ungrateful about the work they did. I appreciate the trail more than the parking lot because I arrive at the trailhead on my bike. I never need a parking space but I have rode through on days there were none.
