View Full Version : Underwear?
:D Our riding group is having a bit of a debate as to whether or not one should wear underwear w/bike shorts. Apparently most of the group prefers to ride with, I however, believe "commando" is the only way. This subject came up specifically because of two newbie women who've recently joined the group and insist on wearing underwear.

Cycling shorts are designed to be worn without underwear. The whole idea of a chamois is undermined by wearing underwear. Moisture management is compromised and the padding is useless when your skin is chaffing against the cotton seams of you undies.

 I was wondering how a conversation like this gets started?!

Yeah, no undies with the bike shorts if you're a guy. However, I'm told a g-string is quite acceptable as it does not interfere with the purpose of the shammy (this info is hopefully applicable to the ladies only).

If i'm gonna wear a g-string while biking why bother...I'd rather just go commando...it's just a psychological thing with no underwear for me.

I think that a g-string is uncomfy too.... much rather go without than feel that thing the whole time. Its psychological for me too~

Oh...by the way MrTB...you must be a lucky man to be biking with these cool sounding women.
In my humble opinion this is a no brainer, and these women would be alot cooler if they were commando..........literally if what Mister Chow says is true

It's true.
But I understand a woman's suspicions when a guy tells her that they're not supposed to be wearing underwear! :D

Oh stop it! You just like the thought of chicks in thongs. ;)
Seriously though, TB...like Chow said, wearing undies completely negates the benefit of wearing cycling shorts. They are meant to be worn WITHOUT any additional layers between the chamois and the skin, regardless of gender. Tell your women friends that they need to stop worrying about wearing the shorts without undies, and start getting used to wearing them as they were meant to be worn. Hell, send them here and we'll give them the 411. This is sort of a sensitive issue for women, though. Most women don't like the though of being so nearly naked. It does take some getting used to but chaffing hurts like hell and can keep somone off the bike. You don't want any additional seams where they shouldn't be, and you have two leg bands running in the area of contact with the saddle. It's like sandpaper.

I like the underwear with the chamois in them. I can wear my regular favorite shorts. The ladies could then benefit from chamois and wear underwear.

I have a pair of liner shorts, which are really just the lycra bike shorts with no pockets, and maybe thinner material, but with the chamois and all sewn in. they're meant to go under a regular pair of shorts, but I wear em under everything from dress pants to jeans. another alternative perhaps?

new riders eh?... after they get broke in.. oops broke out with a little heat rash and so on they'll soon appreciate a good chammy and no underware. They will learn either by taking some well meant advice or by personal experience. Oh by the way my new 3D PI shorts are incredible for comfort in the chammy area. These dry so fast it is incredible no comparison to any of my other shorts.
