I was wondering if any one could tell me which GF 29er FS bike would be better to get. I was looking at a used 03 292 29er but I was told that they raised the bb on the 04 29ers and that really helped them. I mostly ride single track terrain. Also are the other big bike manufactures going to start making 29 type bikes. I am fairly new to mountain biking so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What are you looking to spend? There's this for example:

Personally, I'd stick with a hard tail.

You are right though, about the Fisher BB heights. If you're a pedal whacker, then the new models should be a bit better for you.

what's your budget? there are quite a few small frame makers that can whip up a sweet 29r hardtail.

I was trying to keep it in the 2000 to 2500 price range. Is the GF 29er just an average bike not worth the money?

I am a huge fan of titus full-suspension frames, so if you really wanted a 29r fully, I'd save for the asylum(a speedgoat/titus) a custom ti racer-x, or a vicious version(steel main triangle). A 29r hardtail can roll over lots of stuff though..A GF hardtail 29r is probably fine and would be cheaper overall, although I'd prefer steel -- sycip, vicious, soulcraft,IF,etc.

I thought the Fisher offered a decent value for the money.

But if you've got more money, then look to a smaller, boutique builder.

I'm a Surly rider, myself, but you can never go wrong with a Fisher. I do agree with Maurice, with that kind of budget, check out some other builders before making a final decision.

Man, I can only dream of that kind of budget for a new bike........ :)

Keep us updated as to what you finally decide on.

When I was researching the purchase of my recurve bow I was similarly perplexed. What bowyer? What bow woods? Clear or dark fiberglass? What knock to knock length? The questions seemed to all point out that I was being far too picky. Same when I bought my sea kayak.

Spending what you will end up spending will get you a bike that will make you smile like a butchers dog whenever you are careening down the trail. Don't overthink the process. Takes the fun out of spending money.

I think overthinking is fun!

All you guys looking for a 29 inch bike should check out the Slingshot Bigshot. http://www.slingshotbikes.com/showroom/mountain/bigshot.cfm Although I'm not that into 29 inch bikes, I raced one belonging to Slingshot legend Scott Quiring in Michigan, and it was pretty sweet. I was more impressed by the Bigshot singlespeed, though, because the sling-effect really enhances the ability to climb steep hills when you only have one gear. Seriously, the inchworm flex effect IS NOT HYPE, it actually makes climbing more efficient without being bouncy. The steel slingshot frame might be a little heavier than others out there, but the singlespeed sling is light as hell, which is why I'd recomend the Bigshot singlespeed over the Bigshot with gears.
