1. Have you ever tried singlespeed mountain biking? (yes/no)
2. Do you own and ride a singlespeed mountian bike? (yes/no)
3. If yes to #2, what calendar year did you start singlespeeding?
4. If yes to #2, were any of your close riding pals singlespeeding before you started?
5. If yes to #2, did any of your close riding pals start singlspeeding after you started?

1: Tried it? Yes.
2: Own one? Yes (it's my only, I feel like I should add.)
3: When did I start? 2000
4: Did my pals SS? One of them had a SS, but none of them rode them on the regular. I bought my buddy's from him.
5: Did my pals start after me? A couple of them were starting to drop some money on 1x1's at the same time. So... uh, kind of.

Me too. :)
I should revise my answer to #5. One guy I ride with regularly has gotten a Monocog, but he's got to have one of everything. Time will tell if he actually prefers it over his brand spanking new Epic, his FSR, or his MB-1 (which I covet of course).

1.Yes I started after I race a year on a tandem and we always raced with the sspeeders. I thought I'll try it cuz every one was all XTR this and 9 speed that and I needed a chang after 10 years of keepin up with all the latest crap. Now instead of all my cash going to upgrades I could just buy a Top notch frame..
2. I only ride SS now
3.I started in 2000
4..I don't know anyone else who rides ss and every one tries to talk me into puting my XTR back on my Yeti.
By the way 34X18 works well without a tensioner on most bikes

Dude, it could cost you nothing or it could cost you your soul.
Remove your cables and set the limits on your rear derailleur so that it stays on one cog. Ride, enjoy, repeat. That's the cheap-o way.
Then you'll get suckered in. You'll get a singleator and remove all but the middle chainring. Now you've spent $40. Also remove all cogs but one and add spacer.
Still it doesn't look quite right does it? This is where it can start costing you more money or you may become obsessive. You may have the dropouts replaced so it is a true SS. You might get SS hubs. A riser bar.
The main point is, dont' worry about this stuff, or how much it costs. Just ride, and see how you like it. The more weight you drop the easier it will be. But this doesn't have to be an expensive transition, like I said for $30-40 you can have a pretty damn smooth SS out of your bike. Enjoy!

you're really lucky to have a wife that likes to get out and mash them pedals  [/B]
don't i know it....
just doesn't ride nearly as much as i do, and probably spends more of her riding time on her townie/commuter than anything, but she does get out in the dirt with me now and again.
and, she has the distinction of not owning a bike with a derailer. she's got the SS mtb and the townie's running a 7spd nexus. that's cool too, as far as i'm concerned.

1. Have you ever tried singlespeed mountain biking?
Hell Yes!
2. Do you own and ride a singlespeed mountian bike?
Hell Yes! Lessee- A cannondale SS-MTB on slicks, and a K2 ZedX on chewies (given to SO), and my favorite: a Surly 1X1. just picked up a Redline 925 fixie too. Whee!
3. If yes to #2, what calendar year did you start singlespeeding?
I converted a steel Fuji touring bike with a BMX sprocket in, like, 1983 or 1984 - I was about 20 YO at the time. I was talked out of a fixie conversion by Guy at the LBS in Bellingham. I kicked ass, and had no problem ever keeping up with my roadie homies on their eye-talion campy rides. Spin baby, Spin! I also rode (road?) a Basso track bike fixie with a front brake for about a year in 1995 - 16 pounds and f'ing fast- I wrecked it when I peeled a sew-up off the front rim in an intersection. Ouchy. I never rebuilt it - I left it in a basement when I moved - I hope someone found it and did something with it.
4. If yes to #2, were any of your close riding pals singlespeeding before you started?
Negative
5. If yes to #2, did any of your close riding pals start singlspeeding after you started?
Sadly, again negative, but there is growing interest in some of my friends. Mostly, they think I am nuts.

2-Monocog
3-Monocog in '04, but first dedicated singlespeed (not counting bikes ca. 1957-1960) was a Madwagon Retro, sort of a cruiser-looking thing with balloon tires and ss/vbrake setup. Rode that sucker EVERYWHERE!!! That's when the ss bug really set in. Still got it, just had the bearings done and put SKS fenders on. Absolutely the best bike in the world for the C&O.Oh yeah; also got an old beater fixie (Fuji Special Tourer, early 70s vintage) and recently converted my beloved Schwinn Prelude road bike to fixed. Very nice.
4-No such thing as a close riding buddy in this town. I live in Hancock, MD, right on the C&O and Western Maryland Railtrail. Everybody and their brother passes through on the weekends, but the locals don't ride much. Rather ride their F150s and four wheelers. Fat, lazy sorry-assed chain-smoking Cheeto-scarfing bunch of couch potatoes. F#%& 'em. F#%& 'em all. And when I meet folks on the bikepath and such, mostly folks just up here for the day, they look at me like I'm stupid or something when we start talking bikes and I tell 'em how much I love my fixie and my Monocog.

2) Yes, I own a ss mtb (MonoCog, which is a misnomer as a cog is a tooth on a sprocket and it has two (F & R) sprockets anyway).
3) I got this bike in 2002. I started riding track bikes in about 1973. I even had a single speed Schwinn Typhoon in 1965! Does my old unicycle from the early '70s count?

4.a shop I worked in had a single-speed shop bike for playing on and fetching beer
5.yes, but most have reverted
It should be noted that not only did singlespeeding bring back alot of the pure fun of riding, it also opened my mind to different things; playing with different gearing ratios and such. Currently, my primary mountain bike is once again rigid, with 8sp in back and 2 chainrings up front, but they are 24/35 instead of 22/32 and then I run a ring guard. I have ridden this for several years and it has been a great combination. I recently built up a new singlespeed, though, which promises a new, fun option when heading out.
