Pittsburgh folk should check out East End Brewing. Try the Black Strap Stout, or the Big Hop!!!

Personal favorites are usually from East End, Church Brew Works, Bells, Thirsty Dog.

Hope you don't mind my asking, but where do you go to buy East End beers?? The website wasn't extremely clear and listed a bunch of bars and Vecenie but I still don't know where I would go to by a case. (for example: where is Vecenie's? Can I pick up from them?)

EDIT - Oops, I seem to have answered my question through Vecenie's website. They list distributors that I'm assuming stock East End.

Actually East End isn't bottled, its available only in keg or in growlers, which you can get right at the Brewery and a couple other spots around town.

07-05-2006, 03:36 PM
Ahhh, so the list of retailers on Vecenie's website atleast has growler's?? Or does it depend on the retailer?

Thanks for the help by the way.

Actually no, the only places that fill growlers are the ones that have it on tap, thus keeping it as fresh as possible. Also, only a few places in the city do the growler thing for East End (though you can get them direct at the times listed on the website).

According to recent newsletter, these locations are:

Sidelines in Millvale
Kazansky's in Squirrel Hill
Murray Avenue Grill in Squirrel Hill
The Map Room in Regent Square
Pgh Bottleshop Café in Bridgeville
Bado's in Mt. Lebanon

And, no problem.

Strong..... I believe the trippel is 8%.

Strong? @8%? Naaaah... here's a beefy 9.5% Belgian (http://www.victorybeer.com/golden_monkey.html) for ya'....

And if you don't want to restrict it to Belgians, here's my current fave (http://www.weyerbacher.com/cwo/Beers/index.php?id=7&page_id=23), weighing in at 11.1 %....mmmmmmm!

Buy a keg of it at Vecenie's. They stock local distributors, but also sell direct too.

WWS is definitely a top 5'er for me and it ages very well. I have a 2004 and 2005 in the fridge. My poor dumb willpower is starting to crack.

The kicker is a single bottle is anywhere from $5 to $9 a pop. Definitely worth it, because it is delish and one brew could get a full grown man "through bookins".

Your willpower is def. stronger than mine. I bought 12 bottles of WWS and promptly devoured them in record time.

No, I'm not that bad (yet!).

I can only get down two, maybe three of them in one sitting. They are some powerful brews!

I have been on a Unibroue kick lately. I'll get home from work, hop on the old Varsity, and hit the beer store for a bottle of either La Fin Du Monde, Trois Pistoles, or Maudite. Last weekend, I raped the pantry for a Terrible, and a 2004. That was in addition to a Karmeleit (sp.) and a Goulden Carolous; non-Unibroue beers. Not just for me. I had a housefull and those were "special occasion" beers.

I moved to Mooresville,NC a few months back, the trails here and around the area are like living in a dream. But localally produced brew seems almost non exisitent:( But there is the Carolina Brewery. Go on their Saturday tour, pay 5 buck and they give you this little glass to sample. After a couple of hours of little glasses ,I needed a ride home. Anyways,a couple of nights ago. There was this Blues and Burritos fest next to the library in Mooresville. They listed free beer and burritos in exchange for a small or large donation for local charities. I dropped my 5 bucks into the jar and proceeded to drink at least 12 12 oz cups of premium brew. They had thier signature Blonde,India Brown Ale,Pumkin Ale, and Light. I stuck mainly to the Pumpkin,a little lighter taste and less spice then most pumkin ale. A nice beer for a cool autum night. They have some wierd law here that they cannot produce anything over 6 %. Reminds me of Moab, but not as bad as 3.2 in Utah. You could tell the kind of crowd from the light running out well before the rest of the brews:rolleyes: The many motorbikers in attendance went to the local store to get thier Bud Light, and PBR. Good thing for me,as the line at the beer wagon was really short for the remainder of the eveining:D . I tried to get a pre ride at a trail before the fest ,but had no takers. Back in Michigan,I would have had at least 20. But I still like it here, even if I have to sit in the pub alone post ride:(

I love that stuff too. It's a little pricey though--$14.00 on tap or $18.00 for a 12 oz bottle. Ouch!!!

Dogfish Head is our regular Thursday night post ride hang out. I usually go for the 60 minute IPA, but every now and then I'll get a 90 or 120. The Grouper sandwich kicks ass too.

I made a trip up to Bells in Feb. and was dissappointed with their Java Stout. It was not as smooth as the 6 packs I was getting near home. The Kalamazoo stout was extremely velvety though.

Krafthaus had some good beers also but I felt like I was in a run down saloon. The place was kinda grimey.

My last stop in Kalamazoo was Old Peninsula. I was more pleased at the quality waitresses then the beer. The eye candy made me forget that the beer there was not that great.

That's a very good price. The best price I've seen around here is $176/case. I haven't looked that hard though. The first beer store that I went to that had the 120 was asking $55.00 a six pack. Montgomery county owns all of the liquor distribution so the prices here are higher than neighboring counties.
