View Full Version : I've got a snowy disposition....
The ride in today was if anything, slushy. * inches in a matter of a few hours. I need to take the slicks off. I faired well, staying in tire grooves for those poor unfortunate bastards spinning all over the road. The topper was my spin out in the snow in the front lawn of the office. A student from Pitt walking by said "Are you alright?", and I said "Perfect!" This morning was great.

Ahhh, again you best me, Max... I took the carpool route, though I aim to get out in the woods at some point today. Well... up on road, down on trail, anyway.
Ah, Jeff, I don't blame you man. You do have a slightly farther trek out to DR. I don't know what tires I should use. I think I'll wait it out and just maybe put a bontrager(tiny treaded) on the front just to have better control. This morning rocked. I think 7Springs is in order for the weekend. Did you make into the woods today? How was it? Word!

Max,
You really are a better man than I.
I made it about 5 blocks before I realized that this is really the first snow of the season... most drivers aren't very cautious. So when the Audi that still had a brick of snow covering most of the windshield cut me off, then tried to turn right in front of me, only to slide through the turn, I realized I should go home and take the safe route to work.
In response to your tire question, I made some homemade snow tires a few years ago. They're not hard to make, just time-consuming. If you want to know more, I'd be glad to pass the info on to you .
Enjoy your ride home,
Michael
Anything would be appreciated, Browne, thanks. I don't want 12'spikes or anything, but just enough. Does anyone at DR snowboard? I'm going to 7 Springs on Saturday, brave the crowds, and just try to haul ass. As far as riding into work today, I don't believe I've bettered anyone. I work in Oakland(in Pittsburgh, for all of you non-Yinzers who might be reading), so driving and paying for parking isn't an option, and I can't really get excited about a crowded bus, so, me and my Bridgestone beater take to the streets/slopes, depending on how well groomed the roads are. Did you and Guerrero make it out today? Did any of the DR staff opt not to come in? Even though cycling is hard during winter, I can't help but be a little kid about all this snow. "I don't mind the commute", I told someone this morning, "This is Pittsburgh, not Southern California."

I made two tires before I figured it out. The key is to use round head screws that protrude less than a 1/8" out of the tread. I used some old Kona tires and drove the screws through the actual knobbie. Pre-drilling makes installation easy, and try to stay off the center knobbie. I used about 80 per tire, and alternated, shit... I should just show you.
Joel was the only one to ride in today. He's lucky he isn't dead.

We got a good three inches of the white stuff in Mitchell, SD--and the high was 20 degrees. I was glued to the computer until nightfall, but then I got out to try those WXC 300's I got off Ebay in the fall. They rock!
I was able to go up a steep slope of virgin snow on the yard, then straight up the driveway to the street. It's a ten mile loop around the lake, and it was awsome in the dark. They don't plow this little road, so it was a fun test. The tires passed with ease.
However, the Niterider Night Owl went out after about 20 minutes. Only the tail light kept blinking. I guess the cold got to the battery. Maybe I should stuff it down my pants?
The lake is icy, but I can't trust it yet. Once it's safe, I'm going to put one of these Nokians on my unicycle, and test out the lake.
Winter is awesome.

I finally pulled my unicycle out of long term storage to try and give it another go. I spent a whole summer trying to learn but never really "got" it. Now, after reading more on the basics, I am almost moving along without any assistance. I can't imagine trying to ride it in the snow/ice.
Thank you Kris Holm! For the inspiration. If you have not seen his video, "One Tired Guy" you are missing out on some amazing riding.
