I have a friend who is having a hysterectomy and I'm trying to help her find out how long she'll have to be off the bike post-op.
Does anyone have any experience with this or know someone who's gone through recovery?

Chris, I know nothing, but tell your friend that I wish her a speedy recovery and that she is in my prayers.

Will do Dave. She's watching the thread, so I'm sure she'll see your well wishes.
'Naut, Your friend will be walking that day of. as for anything else she will be out for at least 6 weeks as they cut the tummy muscles, just like a c-section. No lifting of anything heavier than 20-25 pounds for said time frame.

Ok. She's had 3 kids and I think maybe a c-section in the past (she'll tell me if I'm wrong), so that's probably a good reference for her.

Cyclenaut - I had the same type of op. a few years ago but it was for removal of an ovarian cyst & ovary. So not quite the same but exactly the same incision & proceedure as they didn't know if everything else might need to go too !
I was able to 'potter' on the bike after 4 weeks, but I mean literally a gentle roll up and down the road. I was worried about bursting open !!! :-)
At 6 weeks I was back on the bike proper.
Tell her - it was my first ever op. and it's a major one - I was really scared but it was totally cool. I sailed through. I'm sure that being failry fit helped me a lot.
Really - if she's a cyclist & fit - she'll be laughing.
Any more info. required - drop me a mail and good luck -
she will breeze it :-)

Thanks for that Flower! She's had the operation now, and is well into recovery. I don't think she's been back on the bike yet, but she has her usual spirit and is looking forward to riding. Plus, the op appears to have done it's job now, so she'll be able to ride longer!

I had the surgery mid December 2002. The recovery time depends on the manner the surgery is done (uteran or stomach) and how sick you are going into the surgery.
I checked my ride log book and I had my surgery Mid December and I was back on the trails on 1/25/03. I was commuting to work a couple weeks before that. The key for recovery is to do exactly what they say the first 3 weeks. If you mess up and over do the weight limit you will seriously pay a recovery time penalty.
I wish her luck that was a good surgery for me.

Chris, Jan was running about 5 weeks after a CS, your friend will be fine I'm sure, and having had 3 kids no hill will ever defeat her again ;-)
My wife had our 1st kid C-section last week of March and raced the 24 hours of Canaan first week in June, so anything is possible.
