I've looked around the Internet and can't find the answer... What is the true outside diameter of an inflated 29er tire? (+/- .5in) (probably easiest to measure the circumference and divide by pi.

I am going to build wheel carriers for the car rack and would like them to be able to accommodate 29er wheels… (don’t have a 29er currently).

Thanks.

I personally don't know but have you tried Sheldon Brown's website ... if not maybe you could contact Matt Chester through his website - he's bound to know.

Tried Sheldon Brown... mostly writes about rim diameters, not OD of tire. I did some measurements, my road bike with 700C wheels - OD is about 26.5". Mountain bike with a decent sized front tire OD is about 26.75", with a smaller tire.. about 26".

It looks like 26" ATB tire's profile can vary from 1.5" to about 2". (A variation of 1" on OD). Assuming that 29er tires do the same, a max OD would be about 31".

A 700c rim actually measure exactly 25" accross. A 26@ rim 22.5".

The 29" wheel, with a 2" tall tire adds up to exactly 29". Keep some room for a future 2.4" tire, total maybe 29.5" tops.
