Has anyone used the DT rr.1 for a superlight wheel setup? I'm looking for an lightweight alternative to the delgados. I've had good luck with them, but the new bike I'm working on is going to be silly light. I know people have used the Mavic open pros with success, and the DT's are about the same weight, a little lighter though and I think that they're prettier. ;) I've also seen pictures of the American Classic 29 wheels, do they offer the rim by itself?

I've used open pro's on a cross bike, but I'd think they are too narrow to use a proper trail tire... Then again, I used Trek's Mt. Titan 2's on a mountain bike long long ago.
The DT rims are purty and they are as painless to build as the open pro's...I think Mavic has met their match!
Maybe put some rim tape on the rim (if you have one already) and install a fat tire and see if it looks like it'll be o.k. once inflated.

NoTubes.com Olympic rims are 400g (my STRs 392g, about toi be built), MTB-wide, and most of all : MTB designed. They cost, but it's what you want. Light, wide, sufficiently strong.
I've always wrecked OpenPro's as rear rims, on everything less than smooth pavement. The weight is not extremely light, but it's for a part in the heavy double eyelets, taking away weight from the extrusion. So a less impressive weight/stength ratio. On fatter rims, double eyelets hurt less, IMO. Wider profiles also seem to work out to stiffer wheels. Road rims are only so damn narrow because roadies think 20-23mm rim guardss for tires make them so much faster than proper 28mm tires :-)
Oh yeah, the American Classic rims, only supplied as wheelset, are probably on par with the Notubes.

I have a nice wheel setup with Chris King hubs, Sapim CX-Ray Aero spokes and Mavic Open Pro rims. I got the rims becausee of the weight penalty for going with something larger but I'm starting to wonder if I made a bad decision. The reason is partly fueled by my tire selection because I'm sure it is a variable. Basically, I have trouble with good traction in certain situations where it feels like not enough tred is on the ground, and I think it's because the rims are too narrow, and are pulling the outter knobbies on my Bontrager Jones ACX 2.2"ers away from the ground enough to actually make a difference. One way to help would be to deflate the tires just a little more but I'm affraid to do so because of the delicacy of these lighter rims and the stories I've heard about them bending. I am a light rider however (158lbs) and have decided that it's safe enough for me to use the lighter rims. If you're a big guy you should consider something a little stronger. If you're a climber you probably want something wider. If you're a weight weenie without either of the two previous concerns then go with the lightest rim you can find and weenie away!
