Hey all of you Pittsburgh commuters I need a little advice/guidance. I have a wilderness first aid class this weekend at the Red Cross bldg on the Blvd of the Allies downtown. I plan on riding my road/beater Schiwn CrossCut down but I am unsure on where to lock it up for the day. Does anyone know of any safe/secure places I can lock my bike?
thanks

Hmmm. I figure any halfway decent lock and parking meter will do.

Try some nearby parking garages. I've locked my bike in site of the attendant a few times when I was going to be away from it for a while. Crossing the attendant's palm with a fiver never seem to hurt either.

Lock your bike to a signpost, and make sure you lock your front wheel to your back wheel/frame. It won't hurt to take your seat/seatpost with you if you're really worried.

The class is all day (8-5) so I am leaning on using a parking garage w/ a bike rack.
Last night I bought a 1/2" kryptonite cable to go with my U-lock to wind it around the wheels and frame. I was also planing on taking the seat with me to further deter anyone from nabbing it.
Thanks for the responses.

( I live in a very low bike-crime area, so my experiences my not be typical)
I could understand if you had flashier wheels, but for a beast like the schwinn you described, I wouldn't imagine anything more that a sturdy Ulock would be required. Who's gonna rip off $10 rims? :(
Who's gonna rip off $10 rims?
To answer that question I think you should ask the person who ripped off my 12 year old Bridgestone front wheel. Worth, to the untrained eye, about $1.50. I'm not an overly paranoid person when it comes to bike theft. I've had everything imaginable stolen, however, and am convinced that if it isn't nailed down, then eventually it will be stolen. I generally use a U-Lock and a cable through my back rim, and lock front tire and frame together. I've had a friend who just had his brake pads stolen, and didn't realize it until in the middle of traffic. On the side, if you are going to worry the rest of your life about bike theft, you'll eventually become an invalid, so get out and ride.
