Best bet is to go to your local shop for info. If they don't have any trainers there, they can point you in the right direction. You shouldn't have to pay more than $200 for a good trainer.

I have a Cyclops and I am very happy with it. I didn't spend the extra cash on the magnetic system - I didn't really see the point, you can get plenty of resistance by shift gears on the bike. If you get him a tire drive model (which I would recommend - vice rim drive) you should get him a slick tire for the rear otherwise it will be REALLY loud and destroy the knobby tire after a short time.

thanks for the advice... i was at my local bike store last night and the guy recommend a cyclops -- sounds perfect to me. i'm going later to purchase one.

It may be too late to offer this advice, but I've been using the Performance TravelTrak for a few years now. It works great and I only paid $119US for it. I have the hydro-based one.

(Also, I use a slick tire in the back because the knobby makes so much noise.)

heyhey

thanks for your advice. i ended up following the advice at my local store and got him the cyclops fluid trainer. he hasn't gotten it yet so we'll see if it's a hit or not -- if not, i'll gladly use it!

good call about the tire... that was also suggested to me but i haven't gotten that far with the gift yet. i think i'll let him take care of that!

thanks again for all the help i received here -- it definitely came in useful.
