Is Dave Gartelmann really an amputee or is there a bizarre confluence of photo taking that just makes it look that way?

By gaining air, you are losing time – and podium spots... Looks like the BirdMan is coming into fine form in preparation for his DiSSent. After all this hype he's been giving to the locals, he's gonna have to put up.

If I had rigid alloy wrists I'd have tried that rigid alloy fork. But having 15 years seniority on this rock over you, I can tell you that a rigid fork is strictly a thing for masochists at my age. There was some shipping SNAFU and the Reba is supposed to be on its way again. Janov will be pushing to make it a White fork if the Reba goes missing.

now all peeing into a baggy and where did i park my scooter aside, clearly you are using the WRONG bars if running rigid 29 is a problem for you....HAND-AID 2006 (http://www.misfitpsycles.com/catalog/images/FU-Bar-Flat-Blk.jpg) but wait, you have one. this feller acknowledged the 'er in his ways...Pics with the Misfit fork on. 45mm rake and a 72 deg head angle make for a pretty quick front end. That, combined with the ligher weight over the surly fork have really brought this bike to life. The diSSy fork is actually very plush, that was the first thing I noticed when I rode it. Combine that with a 2.3 WTB Exiwolf thing at 26psi and it's butter that sticks like glue. Pitty you didn't get yours. Couple the reba thing with the derailluer deal and your alreay two laps behind.

Glad to hear it. Communting on the road did give me more staying power. That enzyte shite is for the brunyips. Fix gear beer runs grew enormius quads. Up over the overpass with a case of brew dont ya know. I dont buy the whole road thing though. I think it's a set up for the new Mistfit cicle road edition. Twelve bullies, ten lbs. charcoal and a couple 16oz T-bones.......and the hum of 2.3's with the nonstop rotation of fix gear cranks. I must admit I dont know what alloy and anything smaller than 35c semi's feels like on the road. I do run 35psi on the 2.3's for more speed though........

Got on the bike just to un-wind and just dinked around urban stuff along the beach with my 13-year old brother-in-law...him riding on his BMX Schwinn, and me on my full-rigid Merlin.
We hopped over stairsteps, curbs, climbed the same, etc. I also did little sprint races against the BMX monkeyboy all the way to the Niva mechanic (need a new distributor and talked to him about retrofitting an electronic ignition distrubutor off a Fiat Uno). Anyway, it was fun! Yeeha!

I took off at 3PM from my workday to meet up with a buddy for a trail ride that we haven't done for at least 4-5 months, it's been very dry so a riverside trail that usually has mud bog spots on it was bone dry, if someone hadn't dammed up a couple of small creek crossings so they were about 6" deep they'd have been a trickle as well. A great ride though, I haven't been on the Slayer for a month or so, and it was fun to hurtle over obstacles like they aren't there. I did one very tight turn and managed to wheelie half way through the corner and launched myself into the brush on the inside of the corner, that was a chuckle. I always forget just how well the Slayer handles and climbs for a 6x6 bike that weighs 33 pounds. It really is a great point and shoot bike. That was a good way to spend the afternoon.

finally, after 7 weeks, i can say yes, i rode today! i changed jobs this summer and have been out of town for training with no chances to ride. the trails were in amazing shape. we've had 4.5" of rain in the last 2 weeks and all the dust and sand are packed tight.
it would have been a great ride...if not for the huge mesquite thorn that punctured the brand new tube i installed just before the ride. no problem, i'll put in the spare. i put it in, hit it with some co2 only to have a rim strip issue that blew up my only spare when the co2 went in. well crap, i'll have to patch one of the flat tubes. oh very nice, the lid on the patch glue cracked, and it's dried solid. it looks like my ride is turning into a hike. but wait, here come the only other riders i've seen on the trail today. one of them kindly offers up his spare tube. reseat the rim strip, inflate carefully by hand so the rim strip holds. sweet it is holding, i'm back on the trail. made it back to the car, found the good samaritan and replaced his spare with an extra from the big bag of tricks in the car.
but it was still riding again! :D

Just got in from a surreal ride! :p
I rode down to the trendy coffee house, had a coffee, read my book some, then got on the bike just to see what was going on in town.
Tomorrow is the festival of the Virgin de Valle, the holy Virgin of this area. It’s a big deal. It’ll be a holiday for everyone in the city except us at the "gringo" school. Business as usual.
Anyway, the sun was setting, the sky was a surreal overcast with the sun under the clouds lighting up the coastline and water like gold.
I rode to the beach in front of my new condo (not living there yet). The city has blocked the street and erected a large portable stage for Oscar de Leon and another famous Latin artist giving a free concert. Police and Guardia National were everywhere but I was just a guy on a bike (with a tri-colored Timbuk 2 bag across my back). They let me through no problem. I am enjoying riding on this usually busy street without cars. The sea glows from the setting sun.
I get the main road that leads away from the beach and it is bumper to bumper traffic due to the rerouting of traffic. No problem since I am riding on the shoulder, passing police with shotguns, passing cars, while the sky darkens and lightning bolts streak across the sky.
It was almost dream-like. Very cool!

From what I understand, OTB has been filleted. Filleted? Wy does that not look right? Yes, that is how you spell it I guess. I vote for fil-laid. None of this French crepe...

Yesterday was the fiesta de Virgin de la Valle where the whole city celebrated and partied. Last night there was a free concert of Oscar de León (http://www.justsalsa.com/music/oscardeleon/), an internationally famous salsa singer, and I guess people were still high from the experience.
I was just doing my afternoon urban patrol of “the bubble” on the Merlin, and go to the statue of the Virgin de la Valle on the beach where I see a lady selling “cotufa” (popcorn) from a typical cotufa cart. I stop and buy a bag of popcorn.
Her partner, asked me if I wanted a Brahma (a Brazilian beer) or a Regional (a Venezuelan beer). I said no thanks. Then he asked me if I wanted an “Oscar de León”.
“Que? (What?) Didn’t he play last night? (in my bad Spanish)” ,I ask.
He said, “Si! Oscar de León! Tu quedo? (you want?)” and he points to a bottle of dark rum in his cooler. He takes a hit and offers me the bottle. “Tome! (Drink!)”
I take a hit of “Oscar de León” and its pretty good. I laugh, he laughs. “Rico…sobroso! (Tasty…good!)”, I say.
I munch on my cotufa, the guy starts talking to some other potential customers, and I say “Ció pues! (see you later!) Gracias!”
Both the lady and the man say the same, “Ció pues!” International relations…doing my best to be a good American. :p
Note: My Spanish is pretty bad, and my spelling of it is probably worse!

I did today. I felt unstoppable. I cleaned the whole Clinton blue trail, save one climb where I spun out halfway up. Everything just seemed perfect like the bike was climbing on it's own. Even cleaned all the parts of the white that we rode. The vid cam crapped out for somereason very early on. Too bad Chavez has gone spd, only waaaay to tight. He did a over the bars while I was turned around watching while still clipped to the bike. Priceless....

Did a massive group (24 riders) ride today to a small village in the hills called San Bernadino. The route is all high clearance jeep road with some big new ruts from rain. Total distance is about 15 km (~9.5 miles) there and 15 km back (total 19 miles).
With such a large group, there were flats and mishaps the weeded and spread out the group. While waiting in one spot we saw a nice coral snake...very pretty.
On the final, rutty decent into the village, a guy on a Stumpjumper crashed hard. I was the first to arrive to help him. He was laying there with a deep punture wound from rocks in his knee. He was shaking, and maybe a little in shock. I used my unused waterbottle to irrigate it to see what was going on. Imbedding in his knee were small rocks. He used his shakey hands and pulled out one. I told him to let me do it.
I pulled out 4 slivers of rock about the size a small (whole) fingernail, irrigating it each time I pulled one out washing out any dirt and other bits of rock. I came to the "ultimo" (last one). I pulled it and is was the size of a peanut M & M! I rinsed the wound more and we let the blood flow a bit.
We didn't have any bandages and he was in pain. The little village was only about 500 meters down the hill, so we got him back up and he rode down to the village. We got him to the first aid house (kind of a rural clinic) and caused quite a stir in the village. Everybody came to see what was going on.
Some borrachos (drunks) hanging out on the corner, came over with their bottle of rum and washed out the wound with rum. Eventually a nurse came and fixed the guy up.
We hung out in the village for about an hour, then took off and returned the way we came.

It is getting harder and harder to ride, these days. All the rain we were wishing for, all summer, decided to descend upon us, all at once, without much ceasing. Worst part is, most of the thunderstorms make their appearance in the evenings, which is the only time I have to ride, save for weekends. Not to mention, with my daughter being a junior in h.s., this year, and my son being in 2nd grade, I am being stretched thin, with school activities.
So, in an attempt to keep my fat ass from getting fatter...and to prevent me from using the excuse of the weather for laziness...and, because they are predicting a very wet, very snowy winter for us, I have joined a health club, through a great deal we got, here at work (Zach Thomas's club, here in Amarillo).
So far, I'm LOVING it...despite having to get up at 4:30 am, every morning, in order to make the 35 mile commute, get in some exercise, and shower and get ready for work, before work. It's the only consistently free time I have left in my schedule. On Mondays, I do a 5:30 am step aerobics class. On Tuesday & Thursday mornings, I do a kick-ass cycling class. I also have agreed to accompany a coworker, on Tue & Thur AFTERNOONS, to a 45 min. water aerobics class they have, right after work. On Wed. mornings, I have a "Power Pump" class (primarily non-impact class, concentrating on weight lifting, core strength training, and some kick boxing). Finally, on Friday mornings, I do my own thing...usually the weight machines, to build up my strength and boost my metabolism.
Anyway...naturally, I'd rather be on my bike, but this will have to do, for a substitute, for the time being. I'll also, probably, pull my Minoura trainer out of the storage building, soon. It is incredibly boring, riding while staring at the front wall of my garage, but, at least, I'll be in shape for the spring.

Trail unfortunately smelled foul do to the waste treatment plant and the direction of the wind:eek: Not sure why they decided to put in a "nature trail" by a waste treatment facility.

Took the Litespeed out on the usual ride. I was able to clean this one section of trail that I've never cleaned before. Is it the frame, the suspension fork, the tires, the gearing (Merlin; 32-11, Litespeed; 34-11)? Too many variables, so I have decided switch the wheels. Merlin wheels on the Litespeed and vise-versa and riding the same sections over several days, and that way I can see which bike climbs better. I am curious.

I took the old Schwinn out for a 25-30 mile cruise on Sunday. Didn't plan on it at first so I had to find parks here and there for water fountains. Half way into the ride, I was on a tow path and my head phones fell out of my ears and down towards the spokes of my rear wheel. "Noooooo", I said with sort of a giggle. I still had the left ear bud which was kinda nice to both music and the wizzing of my tires.
I was sort of suprised that so few people were out and about in my town Sunday. It was 80 degrees and sunny and I literally only noticed about a dozen people at a beach near my house that usually has thousands of visitors a day in the summer. Oh well, their loss...

I know, but it was close. Why the homogenousituity with these two vehicles? Like Fords, Chevys, Buicks etc back in the '40s - all cars looked the same. Chrysler mixed it up a bit but their marketing design plan was that to be "different" was to simply be uglier than the other manufacturers.

Rode the groupo thang tonight. This might have been our last one as it was getting quite dark when we finished. Had one newb with us tonight and I was impressed. It was the first time he had ever ridden off road. Once he gets his confidence up he will be very fast. I let him past and brought up the back since he was new and a figgered he was going way too fast for the dry sand conditions. Turns out he did fine and not so much as one crash. Good thing, I cant see for shit in the dark. Wreck in front of me and it's Exiwolf tats for you...and over the bars for me.

Good advice. The Merlin is back to its original configuration with a rigid fork (it did have a Z-2 for a couple of years), so its like comparing apples to oranges to a certain degree. Anyway, I am going to swap wheels and see if that changes things. Fun having a choice now.

I rode to the bakery for supplies, but first stopped at a friendly little bodega (neighborhood store) for a beer (the guy has Quebec license plates on the walls). Afterwards, rode down the street towards the bakery and saw one of my high school students. I shouted at him as I rode by. He came into the bakery a few minutes after me and said "You're fast!" I hope so. I replied. There is a race tomorrow. 1st place for Clydsdales (90 kg +) is 150,000 Bs. (about $55.00 USD). Rode back home while the sun was setting into the Caribbean. Yeeha! :)

i didnt let him see me cry though, and he never did get away...when we split off he had a 7k cake walk to his door, i had 15k up hill. it was rainy, cold and i want my mommy.

Not today, going to let things dry out a little bit even though that rarely stops anyone else in the area. It is funny, when things do dry out they are just as good as a network were riders do stay off of the wet trails. Probably the lack of traffic here. Just going to go out with a friend and tools and (maybe some PBR's too) to clean things up where needed.

All went well, and he offered a beer or six as payment. When I went to leave for some reason I decided to bunnyhop the edging around the drive instead of riding over the grass. All in one motion I stopped pedaling, got up out the saddle, and pulled up to hop....but it was a fixie. I ended up over the bars and nearly over the front wheel, but still clipped in and sorta on the bike. I know I looked like such an ass. They prolly wondered WTF I was doing.

I just pictured this in my head and I can't stop laughing.
About 13 years ago, I was riding back from the store with a friend and was passing the front of a movie theatre when he decided for some unknown reason to hit the front brakes. We were going about 13-15 mph so you can picture how quick he went over. There were about 40 people out in front of the movie theatre that saw it and the place went wild. I was laughing for a least a half hour.

Rode Clinton yesterday and today. I feel much older today than Saturday. Yesterday was a very nice ride. Everything went great,no flats, and I felt like I could climb anything. I did go once over the bars on a downhill ledge and get a little banged up,but sall good. Today I bonked. My leggs burned on even the easy cllimbs and my recovery times seemed to be forever. Had two flats today also on the back wheel. When I got home my front wheel was flat too. Just one of those days I guess.

Morrells RULE! Those are fantastic mushrooms, a bit hard to find though. But that's not why I came to this thread.
HELL YEAH I rode today! Today I recieved my Drivers Liscense after a 2 year hiatus. The ability to load the trail bike on the truck after work and go for a singletrack fix can not be overrated. And that is exactly what I did. Today at work was a "Murphy" day, everything that could go wrong did, right up until I had an employee free to take me and my special letter from the Sec of State to the DMV and regain my right to transport myself outside of the range of my bikes.
After I regianed said right, I went to the job site to give end of the day instructions to the one fellow still working and headed directly home to load the bike and gear and off I went, 15 miles to the trial head and then sweet release from lifes troubles for a bit :D

Finally I do a ride worthy of mention.
I got up at 5:00 AM to meet the group at 6:00. We convoyed to our starting place in cars and finally started riding the bikes around 7:00 AM. Lots of cyclists this time...about 30.
Same ride as a few weeks ago...coastal highway, to Playa Santa Fe, up the river valley and climb to the village of Los Altos (700 meters above sea level) in the cloud forest of the coastal mtns.
This ride is all pavement but with lots of climbing and a screamer decent at the end. There was some sever flooding of the road so lots of football sized rocks and mud on the road. About 64 km (about 40 miles? + - 5 miles since I don't use a cycle computer).
The Merlin did good today...except her back wheel went soft on the screamer decent. It was getting squirrelly on the switchbacks. I had to stop and pump it up (Slime tubes) then try to catch up to the lead guys. Impossible!
Back home in time for lunch with my wife. :)

It was kinda funny on today’s local spin. I took along some pruning shears and a bow saw in the back pack with the intension to do some clean up on a little trail the county put in behind the Library and the elementary school. I hadn’t been on it for a couple months and always thought no one used it, the bridges are in need of repair, it’s overgrown and not even a 1/2 mile long but it’s fun and I usually hit it on the way to some other trails. So I’m on the way, coming up on the first bridge and WHOA! Someone’s been doing some work back here! I live on the edge of suburban sprawl north of The Big Crab and they have built some condos that back up to the Beltway spur out here. It looks like the local condo association hired somebody to drag a bushhog through the woods and lay down some wood chips. The chips made for some spongy corners and there was no concern for the trees they beat the crap out of with the bushhog and I honestly don’t think the builder understood the concept of grading but hey, I gotta new trial to ride! Hope the condoites don’t mind a local in their backyard! Maybe I should get a pair of velour riding shorts!

Sorry no pictures, not quite that fluent with the computer, but yeah... despite going at it alone I went for a ride today. Started with the classic Joe's Trail doing all of the loops then went out and checked on something that I had not been out to in years becasue last time I was there it was hell. The Whiskeag Connector to the old Mill Damn was in pretty good shape and it looks like someone has been out there making an effort with some bridges. From there went to the good old Huse Woods and out to the Wing Farm to climb up to the H20 Tower and out to Interstate. Found a good spot off of the old roads where there is a view towards Mt. Washington from Whitch Spring Hill. Even though the trail under the power lines it a wheeler trail, riding the bare granite bedrock gives a desert feel to the coast of Maine. Wanted to continue the ride and head into the Hyde woods, but was running out of sunlight and did not have niterider with me.
The potential is here. Little by little a network of singletrack will form again. It is just a shit ton of work to do alone.

So I went out to Albion Hills today with some people that I met ...
To say the least - it was awesome!
Some of the hills were scary... Yes laugh at me now but the Rookie walked the first downhills and climbs... as I got better on the double tracks, they took me on the single tracks and some scary downhill -as we kept going they were pretty amazed that i was doing so well. Nice to have patient veteran riders with me who were willing to wait for me :D ... as I have never done hills like that in my almost flatlands area... it was a little I learned alot on this first "REAL" ride... now that I really got the taste for dirt... me wants more!
to think I did this trail in my clunker of a bike with no suspension... and semi-slick tires...
Hey nogears.... as I was getting my bike back in the car after the ride, and as I was sucking on power bar a guy pulled up with a diSSent on the roof rack. The guy looked like a brick house! Hey nogears, perhaps a new model for the misfitpsycles ads?

Went for a ride yesturday with a buddy hoping to go out for the same long ride I did a couple days ago. Got a flat pretty far out into the woods. No big deal (although why the hell do the beads have to be so frigging tight?!) had a spare and pump. Then putting the chain back on the single speed something seemed very tight. Then the chain broke and upon fixing was too short to run even with my EBB rotated to furthest back position. So I had to bail and take my bike for a jog/ walk. Damn, bummer, but not enough to come close to ruining the ride that I had up until that point. I guess it is time for a new chain.

Went for a fun little ride this afternoon with my wife. She's been wanting to ride her bike (a 1999 K-2 Zed w/ a long travel SID) more. She was complaining about the seat, so I fitted it with a new women's specific saddle a couple of days ago.
I showed her how to get to the bike path. From the path, I took her "off road" a little...kind of a motorcycle flat track area (some motos were there so we had to keep clear of them).
We got back on the path, and found another dirt area. I dinked around climbing big berms piles, while she rode around in the flats.
The sun set, so we headed back. At one point we split; she went directly home and I headed to the panaderia (bakery) to get some fresh baggets for dinner (I had my Timbuk 2 bag with me).
It was a fun little ride con mi esposa! :)
PS: She liked the saddle...big improvement.
