Cell Phone Telemarketing

I did not check on this, but assume it is true:
--------------------------------------------

Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end up costing you money in the long run.

According to the National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15th 2004 to get on the national "Do not call list" for cell phones. You need to call 1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" to be put on the list or do it on-line at http://www.donotcall.gov/

Great. Now I'll add telemarketers to the list of annoying things about my phone. All I own is a cell phone - it's cheaper than a house phone because I make a lot of long distance calls. If any of you are considering getting a cell phone, I recommend checking the exchange first. The exchange is the middle three numbers, and is specific to a town, or area of a city, or something. My exchange happens to be the same as the neighboring area code. Everytime someone tries to call someone in that area code and forgets to dial a '1' first, they call me or someone else with the same exchange as me. For example...Say massachusettes area code is '781'. Say my phone number is 834-781-2234. Someone in my area code used to calling someone with the number 781-223-4xxx on a cell phone tries to dial it on a land line without a '1' first. Who gets called? 834-781-2234. I now answer my phone with "Hello, if you're trying to call massachusettes you need to dial a '1' first, you f*cking moron" Ah, technology.

How do we know the government isn't going to secretly sell the numbers to the telemarketers?

People at my company get telemarketing calls on their company cells all the time. I think its a conspiracy by our company to waste more of our time! I mean, its not like our e-mail server is actually working right now or anything.

Phone number to get off the list

Hey, call this number to get put on a national do not call list. It will put you on the list for 5 years. If someone calls before then, you get the company name and operator name, (if you can), and file a complaint. Call the #, dial 1 for english, then 1 to register. You have to call from the cell phone you want off the list. 1-888-382-1222.

I do believe that they reported on the news last night, that this story is bogus. It is illegal for them to call you when it cost you money.

I've heard that on a few different news radio stations now. Makes you wonder about all the calls that people do get on their cell phones and pagers though. Its not just people that work at my company. I've talked to a number of people at different hospitals and companies that get these calls all the time on their cells.

A consortium of wireless providers is planning to create a 411 (directory assistance) service for cell phone numbers: True.

You must register your cell phone before 1 Janunary 2005 to prevent your number from being provided to telemarketers: False.
