Here's the deal on Hartwood if ya want some bonus points...

Come one, come all, there's still much digging to to in Hartwood. The south side of the park is looking good, is it not? Let's go north. Meet at 10 am at the mansion parking lot. We'll work for four hours or so, then maybe take a ride or head straight for the grill and beverages (Troegs).

As usual, dress for success in work clothes, gloves and boots and bring a favorite tool or two if you like. Rain or shine!

Aaaand, since the PUNK BIKE ENDURO is a month later (Dec 4th) I'm offering 25 PUNK POINTS to anyone who works the full November 6th work day. How about them apples?

See you in a week,
Maurice

Good News - The Trails Are Still There

So it's been a long time since I've ridden any of the Punk Bike trails. A crew of us rode most of the Punk Bike this afternoon, 13 miles or so including the road sections. Surprisingly, the trails were pretty dry considering it rained pretty good yesterday.

Anyhow, it was a great ride. Browne, Clemens and I even headed into Hartwood on the way home and finished with Rotten Bone and the Home Trail.

Ugh! Yet another Hartwood Acres trail maintenance day I'm not going to be able to make it to. (Dedicated to a Book'Em event instead.)

What kind of Punk Bike Enduro day-off volunteer work do you need? I'd love to get out this year to check it out!

Hey I haven't been to one of your trail maint. days, but am going to try to make it sunday... what kind of tools do you need, and do you want powertools such as chainsaws etc.
I ride hartwood often, and know the sound of a chainsaw would stir up a hornets nest, but I also believe you must have something worked out with the park, yes no?

Brunge,
I'll definitely let Maurice speak for the tools that are going to be brought to the Hartwood event, but typically there are enough McClouds and grubbers to go around. At the Allegheny county events, Don is there with the chain saw, so you can go ahead and leave the power tools at home. (The county and city really doesn't like us running them ourselves.) This time of year if you've got a big giant leaf rake at home you could bring it might be helpful ... they usually are at North Park and Frick.

Hey,

I'm going to do the Enduro thing this year. Never done it before. Can anyone tell me what it's like? I see it's about 13 miles, but what's up with all the stages ,etc?

Thanks

Here's a good write up, and there's this, too.

Here's a small map, and a much larger map.

The 2004 Course Description was:
1. Number One
After a short climb up Dorseyville road, racers will assemble en masse atop Indianola Road for a quick downhill road sprint before funneling into tight, downhill singletrack…watch the roots. Once you splash through the first creek you can expect large mud puddles, nice singletrack and a pretty flat contour until the end. The end, however, holds a special downhill surprise into Endless Valley. Hint, go high over the tree stump.

2. Derby!!!
After slogging down Endless Valley and ducking under the tunnels, the crowd reassembles at Mitchell’s for a Derby. Don’t know how to derby? You’ll learn soon enough.

3. The Road Uphill
The name says it all. It’s a toughie, better hydrate at the van before this one. Keep an eye out for Ryan’s backyard on the right—people ride that crazy crap!

4. Downhill Into Oil Well
One of the Punk Bike Enduro’s classic downhill runs, this stage more than makes up for the climbing you just did—providing you can keep your front wheel from washing out. I suggest you pick a quad track and pray. Oh, and the end is a mudfest. Enjoy.

5. Another Downhill Into Oil Well
You can all personally thank Adam Lipinski for suggesting that we climb Old Mill all the way back up to the top of Oil Well. Really, you should, because doing it on trail this time of year is sort of murder. For your climbing efforts, you are rewarded with an even longer downhill back into Oil Well. Like Duffman says, “oh yeah!”

6. Uphill
After the post-Oil Well beer stop, the group does a short, cinder road uphill, crosses 910 and reassembles at the foot of the Pet Cemetary Road for the infamous Uphill/Downhill. The Uphill portion has racers shoulder their steed and scramble up a steep, oft-times slippery slope. Easy peasy.

7. Downhill
After collecting yourself (or tossing your cookies) racers line up atop the same slippery slope and bomb it for all the glory. The smart money’s on Pete Weir if he shows up.

8. Pet Cemetery Road
This dirt road climb tends to separate the quick from the dead—and it never gets any easier. If you’re not racing, take a moment to stop at the Pet Cemetery half way up the hill. It’s creepy, even without Fred Gwynne, eh?

9. Lollipop Loop
Racers will assemble atop the Pet Cemetary Road and sprint for a narrow, bumpy entrance into the farmer’s field. After a short stretch of singletrack through the grass, racers will file into the woods for some primo dirt bike trails. Oh yes, that water’s not just cold—it’s deep, too.

10. Emerling Downhill
Ok, so the whole run isn’t downhill, but most of it is, actually. This prime stretch of singletrack tends to consistently produce the three elements of a good ride—mud, blood and walking. Got dental insurance? Good, then don’t worry about the fall line downhill into Emerling Park. Congratulations, we’re finished. Ride up 910, turn left on Saxonburg and head to the fire hall for some grub.

It'll take all day long to ride - 4 or 5 hours on the trails with plenty of breaks in between stages.

Prepare for mud and cold weather.

Costumed riders are typical for some reason or another...

It'll be hard. It'll be fun.

Pot luck after the "race" so bring something. Full kitchen available. Don't be one of the people that shows up with nothing and chows down at everyone's expense.

Even if I can't make it to Hartwood

I probably won't be able to make it to Hartwood for trail maintenence because of a preivious engagement with another club(model building). But if I can make it out for the Enduro, even just to check it out, I'll probably be there.
