Muddy punk smile. Karl Rosengarth photo
I clipped in and pedaled into a rare Western Pennsylvania bluebird December day—awash with brilliant sunshine beaming through below-freezing air that filled my lungs with a a lust for life. "This is the perfect day for the Punk Bike Enduro," I thought to myself. It would have been too. Except that this was Saturday, and the Punk Bike was on Sunday, and rain was headed our way.

The rain showed up after dinner, and it was the freezing variety—encasing cold terrestrial objects with a frozen veneer of ice. As I looked out my window at the ice-coated scene, vision of iced roots and glazed rocks danced through my head. I panicked. Down into the basement I dove, to prepare a nuclear-winter-ready "backup" bike. Trusty old hardtail, studded tires, fenders—yeah, that ought to do the trick. Around midnight, I took "Plan B" for a spin around the block and deemed the steed would be up to the challenge, if needed.

It wasn't. I awoke on Punk Day to find that the warm overnight rain had washed away the initial layer of ice that had formed on the colder objects in the neighborhood the night before. A victory of sorts. Now the challenge would be: rain, 40 degree temperatures and mud—lotsa mud. The kinda of weather that kept the faint-off-heart indoors, while our intrepid band of punks rolled into the gaping maw of the mother of all muckholes. I'll spare you the soggy details, and direct you to my Punk Bike photo gallery, for thousands of words via pictures. Check out the Punk Bike videos here.
