Seattle Launches Ghostcycle
By: Jack Miller

With the launch of a Ghostcycle program and web site, Seattle is now at the forefront in the fight for cyclist’s rights. Programs such as Ghostcycle, which spread the word about incidents that involve cyclists being struck by cars, have taken place around the country in cities like St. louis and Pittsburgh. Seattle’s Ghostcycle.org is a comprehensive web site where cyclists can report traffic accidents and share their stories. The site also serves as a vehicle for educating the public on bike advocacy.

Even with programs like Ghostcycle, accidents and tragedies, such as a recent incident in Las Vegas, in which Don Albietz, an off-duty policeman, was struck and killed in a hit and run accident, are sill very much a reality. While we’re a long way from eliminating such horrific occurrences, Congress has just voted to help out the cause in a big way. Last Friday, a new national transportation bill passed both houses of congress by an overwhelming majority. The new bill has set aside over $1 billion dollars for bike-related programs, and should help to better the cycling experience for all Americans.
