A Gathering of Artisans
By: Brad Quartuccio

"Rolling works of art." That's the best way to sum up the bikes on display at the second annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show in San Jose, California. On the first weekend in March, over sixty custom frame makers along with twenty or so tooling and componentry manufacturers gathered under one roof to show off the best of the best in bicycle craftsmanship.
Intricate hand carved lug work by the likes of Bruce Gordon, Richard Sachs and Sacha White stood next to custom carbon and bamboo cycles for the 2500+ attendees to peruse. Exhibitors overwhelmingly reported success in meeting prospective customers, with some builders such as Mike DeSalvo receiving deposits for future work.
Many attendees took advantage of the dozen seminars on proper fit, performance cycling and bicycle construction methods. The most intricate work held true to the old saying, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it," with some price tags reaching five digits, not including change.
Check out the Dirt Rag Gallery for over 100 photos, and read what The Dirt Rag Nation is saying about the show in the Dirt Rag Forums.
